Weaving Resilience: Why I’m Launching a Fundraiser to Sustain JoySilk’s Future
For over two decades, my life and livelihood have been woven—quite literally—into silk.
Silk is not just a fabric to me. It is a language, a relationship, a way of bringing beauty into the world that feels both ancient and deeply personal. Every piece I create is made with intention, and that takes time, and care. And for more than 20 years, I’ve been able to rely on a trusted silk supplier who helped make that creative flow possible.
But something has shifted. Quietly at first…then all at once.
When a Trusted Supply Begins to Disappear The Impact of Tariffs on Silk Supply and Small Fashion Designers (And What I’m Doing About It)
Over the past year, I’ve watched my longtime materials supplier—a silk importer I’ve relied on for decades—struggle to maintain inventory. Silks that were once consistently available are now out of stock. During the pandemic we dealt with slow supply chain. Products were back-ordered, containers were delayed in port, now tariffs pinball between raising and skyrocketing. Communications regarding future supply chain are uncertain.
And behind the scenes, the reasons are complex.
Global trade disruptions, rising costs (for both materials and shipping), and the impact of tariffs on silk supply have placed enormous pressure on textile supply chains. In fact, recent tariff changes have significantly increased costs across the fashion and textile industries.
These ripple effects are not abstract—they’re deeply personal for small, independent artists like me. There is also a very real concern that my longtime silk supplier may not survive this period of instability. Saying that out loud is heartbreaking.
Because when a supplier disappears, it’s not just a business loss—it’s the loss of a relationship, a shared history, and a creative partnership that can’t simply be replaced.
The Reality Facing Joy Hand Painted Silk
Larger fashion brands have more ability to pivot. They can shift sourcing, absorb costs, and renegotiate contracts.
Small businesses? We feel every tremor. And while global silk production continues, the overall market has contracted from previous peaks, making high-quality silk harder to source and purchase consistently.
What that means in real terms:
Fewer available materials
Higher minimum order requirements
Increased upfront investment
Greater financial risk for small designers
In other words… continuing to create at the level of quality I’ve built JoySilk upon is becoming more challenging than ever. But I’m not someone who gives up when things get difficult. I am resourceful, I look for a new path.
A New Possibility: Sourcing Silk from Pakistan
Over the past several months, I’ve been exploring a new relationship with a silk supplier in Pakistan. Pakistan has a long and rich textile tradition, and despite facing its own challenges—from tariffs to rising production costs—the country remains a key player in the global textile ecosystem.
I am currently awaiting samples from this new associate, and I feel a sense of cautious excitement. Because this could be the bridge forward. A way to continue creating the luminous, hand-painted silk pieces that define JoySilk—without compromising quality.
But there is a catch.
To access the best pricing and make this transition viable, I need to place a larger order than I typically would. A meaningful investment upfront that allows me to secure consistent materials moving forward. It’s one of those moments where a door is open…but stepping through it requires courage—and resources.
Why I’m Asking for Your Support
If you’ve ever worn one of my silks, you know:
Joy Hand Painted Silk is not fast fashion. It is not mass-produced.This is heirloom quality wearable art you can live in. .
JoySilk has always been about connection—between artist and wearer, between beauty and everyday life.
Each silk is painted entirely by hand—making every piece a one-of-a-kind painting you can wear.
So I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I’m inviting my community to be part of this next chapter.
I’m putting together a direct funding campaign with a goal of $3,500, which will allow me to secure a foundational order of silk—enough to create approximately 100 hand-painted ruanas. This new supply will not only carry the work forward, but also ensure I can continue offering the beautiful, high-quality silk pieces that Joy Hand Painted Silk is known for.

A Note on the Bigger Picture (Without Getting Too Political)
We are living in a time where global events—trade tensions, tariffs, and even regional conflicts—are shaping industries in ways we feel in our daily lives.
Tariffs on textile imports from China have risen significantly in recent years, in some cases reaching close to 30%, dramatically changing the economics of sourcing materials.
These shifts create uncertainty for artisans, small manufacturers, and independent creators around the world. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But I do know this: When systems become unstable, community becomes more important, and that’s what this is about.
Giving Back: Donation Incentives from the Heart

Why This Matters (Beyond Me)
When you support JoySilk, you’re not just supporting one artist, you’re supporting:
Slow fashion
Ethical, small-scale creation
The preservation of textile artistry
A more personal, connected way of doing business
In a world of mass production, choosing to support handmade work is a powerful statement, it says:
“I value beauty.”
“I value artistry and craftsmanship.”
“I value things that are made by-hand.”
And that matters more than ever right now.
A Personal Reflection
This hasn’t been an easy realization for me. There’s grief in watching a trusted supplier struggle. There’s uncertainty in stepping into a new sourcing relationship, and there’s vulnerability in asking for support. But there is also something else. Hope.
Hope that this next chapter will open new creative possibilities. Hope that this community—you—will help me carry this work forward. Hope that even in a shifting, unpredictable world, beauty can still be made… and shared.
An Invitation
If JoySilk has ever brought something meaningful into your life—
If you value artistry, craftsmanship, and pieces created with intention—
If you feel drawn to be part of something rare and enduring…
I invite you to join me.
This is a meaningful moment—one that will shape what comes next. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps secure the materials needed to continue creating the one-of-a-kind silk pieces you love.
If you have questions, I warmly welcome them. You’re invited to reach out through the contact page, or to ask in the comment section at the bottom of the blog so others can share in the conversation and understanding.
And if supporting financially isn’t aligned right now, sharing this with someone who appreciates beauty and artistry is a powerful way to be part of it.
Because this is not simply about silk. It’s about preserving a way of creating, a standard of beauty, and a connection between artist and collector.
And what we choose to support in this moment… continues forward.
Wrap yourself in Joy—where silk becomes art you can live in.
With gratitude,
Joy

My life pathway of Joy's Hand Painted Silk started when on a local level I spent about 10 days doing a campaign for my friends who had just been told that Cancer is going to change your life. Since that was the start of my meeting a friend of Joy's Dad as he donated a gift to the auction. I did follow up and in time saw the wonderful Art that she made. Now this is going back over 15 years ago or so.. So I can say with honesty I have followed her work. Untold how many of my family have been gifted her wonderful Silks.
I treasure the few silk scarves I have. They are an easy way to bring joy and beauty into one’s life, especially in these times.
So well expressed, Joy, this peek behind the curtain. I wish you great success with the fundraiser.
What a fascinating look into the global—yet very local—silk industry from a career artisan with 30+ years of experience. And to see real impacts of trade policies, how it affects a real person here and a real village abroad. Great share, Joy; I’m happy to support the mission!
I’m so sorry that man in the White House is impacting your business. We are all feeling it, higher healthcare costs, groceries and gas. Wishing you all the best🩷
